As I say on the About page, I use AI tools in my work, and I curate, edit and fact-check everything before it is published. This notice covers the writing, editing and arrangement that are mine.

Posts that first appeared on Medium are the same work, and each one links back to its original there.

Quoting and reuse

  • Short quotations are welcome, with credit to Madkat Omega and a link to the post.
  • Please ask first before republishing a whole post or a long excerpt, translating or adapting it, or using it commercially.

Images and other people’s work

The images on this site come from three kinds of source.

AI-generated images. Some images are made with AI image tools to illustrate a post. They are illustrations, not photographs, and shouldn’t be read as showing real people, places or events. I try to say so in the caption.

News and web images. Some images come from news organizations and other public sources, or were found through web and image searches. I use them under the fair use doctrine of U.S. copyright law (17 U.S.C. § 107), to comment on, criticize, report on or teach about the subject, at the size needed to make the point, and with a credit or a link to the source where I know it. I don’t own these images. Using one is not a claim of ownership, and it doesn’t mean the rights holder endorses this site. Fair use depends on the facts of each case, so I judge each use in good faith. If you disagree about one, see below.

Other people’s art. The helmet on the About page is SPACE Helmet V1.2 by Alexandre Ferra, used under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. The full credit, including a note that the header avatar and site icon are crops of it, is in the Credits section there.

Videos are played from YouTube and remain the property of their owners. This site links to them and doesn’t host them.

Credits, corrections and removals

If you own an image or text that appears here and would like it credited differently, replaced or removed, contact me with the address of the page and what you’d like done. I’ll review it promptly and fix, replace or remove it as appropriate.

Privacy

In short: this site doesn’t collect information about you. There are no analytics, tracking pixels, ads, accounts, comment forms or newsletter sign-ups, and the site sets no cookies.

When you visit

  • Hosting. The site is served over HTTPS by Cloudflare. To deliver the site and keep it secure, Cloudflare processes the requests your browser makes (your IP address, browser details and the pages you ask for) and may keep logs under its privacy policy. I don’t run analytics or collect visitor data myself; Cloudflare’s dashboard may show me aggregate traffic totals.
  • On your device. Your browser’s local storage remembers your light or dark theme choice and the menu’s scroll position. This stays on your device and is never sent anywhere. You can clear it in your browser’s site settings.
  • Search. The search page runs entirely in your browser. What you type is not sent to me or anyone else.
  • Fonts and images are served from this site itself, not from Google Fonts or other outside services.

YouTube videos

Some posts include a click-to-play video. Nothing is requested from YouTube or Google until you press play. After that, your browser loads YouTube’s player (from YouTube’s privacy-enhanced youtube-nocookie.com address), so Google receives your IP address and can see that you watched, under Google’s privacy policy. If you’d rather not, use the YouTube icon under each player to open the video in its own tab, or skip it.

Posts link to Medium, news organizations and other sites. Once you follow a link, that site’s own policies apply.
